Between the construction zones on 96, the railroad crossings downtown, and the general wear and tear of Williamson County roads in winter, Franklin drivers put their vehicles through more than they might realize. Your exhaust system takes a particular beating — it runs the full length of the undercarriage and is exposed to every pothole, every splash of road water, and every temperature extreme.

Spring is when exhaust problems that developed slowly over winter become noticeable. Here’s what to listen and watch for:

A rumbling or roaring sound that’s louder than it used to be, especially under acceleration. This is the classic symptom of a failing muffler or a hole in the exhaust pipe. It will continue to get worse — it won’t resolve on its own.

A hissing or ticking sound at startup or during acceleration. This typically points to an exhaust manifold leak — exhaust gases escaping upstream of the muffler. Manifold leaks can allow fumes to enter the cabin and damage nearby engine components if left alone.

A rattling sound at certain RPMs, especially at idle. Often a loose heat shield or exhaust hanger — sometimes a minor fix, always worth confirming.

Reduced fuel economy without a clear explanation. Exhaust backpressure issues directly affect how efficiently your engine runs.

A sulfur or rotten egg smell from the rear of the vehicle. This usually points to a catalytic converter problem.

Exhaust is our specialty at Quick Auto and Exhaust in Franklin. If any of these symptoms sound familiar, come in and we’ll diagnose it accurately and fix it right.
